WESTERLY, Rhode Island — Authorities are continuing to investigate a serious small plane crash that occurred Sunday near the Stop & Shop plaza on Franklin Street, close to Airport Road in Westerly. The incident prompted a large emergency response after reports confirmed that the pilot suffered critical injuries following the crash.

According to emergency dispatch information, the single-engine aircraft went down near 149 Franklin Street, an area close to businesses and heavily traveled roadways. First responders arriving at the scene discovered the pilot severely injured, with emergency medical personnel immediately beginning lifesaving efforts. CPR was reportedly performed before the victim was transported to a nearby hospital for advanced medical treatment.

While early reports raised concerns about a potential fire, officials later confirmed there were no active flames. However, emergency crews faced another dangerous challenge after discovering a significant fuel leak from the aircraft. Firefighters quickly established safety perimeters and deployed hazard containment measures to prevent ignition and protect nearby residents, businesses, and responders.

The Westerly Fire Department, police officers, EMS personnel, and additional emergency agencies worked together to secure the crash site, close nearby roads, and manage hazardous conditions. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area while crews handled cleanup operations and investigators documented the scene.

Officials stated the plane came to rest roughly 250 feet off Airport Road, requiring responders to carefully navigate uneven terrain while stabilizing the aircraft and containing leaking fuel.

The cause of the crash remains under active investigation. Authorities are examining several possible factors, including mechanical failure, weather conditions, and pilot-related issues. Aviation investigators are expected to review flight records, maintenance history, and evidence from the crash site.

The Westerly community continues to hope for the pilot’s recovery while expressing gratitude for the swift actions of emergency responders whose efforts helped prevent further tragedy.
