GFL Shooting: Business owner Ilan Philosophe, who was recently charged in connection with a series of shootings targeting executives linked to GFL Environmental and its sister company Green Infrastructure Partners, has been released on bail as investigations continue into the high-profile case.
For more than 18 months, violent incidents involving the companies dominated conversations across construction sites and Toronto’s financial district. The attacks included suspected arson, vandalism, threatening messages, and shootings at the homes of executives connected to GFL and Green Infrastructure Partners in both 2024 and March 2026.
Police earlier this month announced the arrest of Philosophe, founder of the competing excavation business Astro Excavating Inc.. Authorities allege the incidents were tied to escalating tensions and fierce competition over lucrative construction contracts within the industry.
The case has attracted widespread public attention due to the scale of the alleged intimidation campaign and the prominence of the companies involved. According to reporting by journalists Robyn Doolittle and Tim Kiladze, investigators spent months examining a complex web of hostile exchanges, alleged threats, and disputes surrounding major business deals.
The reporters, who spent over a year covering the story, also conducted extensive interviews with Philosophe before his arrest. Their investigation detailed growing conflicts within the construction sector and the increasingly hostile environment surrounding multimillion-dollar contracts.
While Philosophe has now been granted bail, the criminal proceedings remain ongoing, and authorities continue to investigate the broader circumstances connected to the shootings and alleged intimidation efforts tied to the case.
